One of the truly unique characteristics of the Kentucky Derby, and its sister event, the Kentucky Oaks, is that they are sports parties that showcase the finest in spring fashions. Both female and male attendees pull out all of the stops when selecting their Kentucky Derby and Oaks apparel. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to Derby dressing, in part because what you wear has much to do with where you plan to spend the day. In the reserved seating areas grandstand, clubhouse, suites and corporate hospitality areas , ladies typically wear spring dresses, pastel-colored suits, or bold separates that coordinate with their Derby headwear and accessories. The Kentucky Derby is a chance for every female to express her inner Southern Belle so take note and don’t hold back when planning your Kentucky Derby wardrobe! When selecting your dress for the Kentucky Derby the recommended practice is to keep it simple, so it doesn’t take away from your hat.
History of HAT
Evening dresses were often off the shoulder. Hair was parted in the centre with ringlets at the side of the head, or styled with loops around the ears and pulled into a bun at the back of the head. Paisley or crochet shawls were fashionable accessories, as were linen caps with lace frills for indoor wear, and large bonnets for outdoors.
Capes with large collars were fashionable. Very fashionable men sported low, tightly cinched waists, with rounded chests and flared frock-coats that gave them a rather hour-glass figure inspired by Prince Albert.

Britain is a nation of hat wearers, of that there is no doubt. Traditionally hats are a very loaded item and have almost totemic power in their ability to signify class, gender, occupation and a myriad of other stations. Even the protocol has symbolic value; from doffing your hat to launching mortar boards in the air, hats have long been associated with rituals and practices stretching back into the mists of time.
The humble flat cap can be traced back to medieval England and was even the subject of Tudor sumptuary laws. In an attempt to spur on the wool trade an Act of Parliament was instituted in decreeing that all males over six years old except for the nobility had to wear a wool cap on Sundays and holidays, with a penalty of a fine if they refused.

Anyone who has turned their mind to dating photographs knows that there are all sorts of clues that can help with this. Clothing is an important feature of portraits, so that a general knowledge of changes in fashion can help to establish dates at least in relation to decades. Clothing can also help in dating street scenes and other photographs where people are out and about. Also, most of the portraits show mainly middle class women dressed in their Sunday best.
Even so the photographs provide a place to start from. Things to note are the hair style, the tight fitting upper garment with a broadly V shaped braid pattern from shoulders to waist, fairly full sleeves, and of course the full bell shape of the dress. The hair has a central parting, and framed the face looping down behind, often held in a hair net or snood. Cloth is folded from shoulders to waist forming a V shape.
Sleeves here are wide and loose. This is an example of a pagoda sleeve. Most notable thing at this time is the absence of a crinoline. Other features are similar to the preceding period such as the tight upper garment and the V shaped arrangement of the over-garment from shoulders to waist which, in this case is part of an over skirt worn with the dress proper. Protection, status, and vanity have always been the prime reasons for wearing hats. A hat is much more than a piece of clothing; it is a cerebral fashion accessory that can mark personality, social etiquette, and lifestyle. The twenty-first century is a relatively hatless age, with the exception of the baseball cap and modern hoods. This might be just a passing fad, but it is socially as significant as trends of the previous era, when men wore proper hats all the time.
There have been hatless periods in history before. Eighteenth-century wigs replaced hats and coiffeurs eclipsed the hatter, but the nineteenth century dictated hats for men again with many important styles still remembered with nostalgia. Post-World War I democratic ideologies, modern infrastructure, and, most importantly of all, the car, all caused the gradual demise of hats.
World War II changed social values even more, resulting in youth’s imperative right of wanting to look radically different from the previous generation. Yet fashion’s pendulum never ceases to swing, and there might well be a time in the future when fashion will demand that heads need to be covered again.
Spring is upon us, Easter is coming soon, and baseball season is about to begin here in the U. It is the time of year many people wear all sorts of hats, until winter hats are again needed. Actually, this topic has been on my mind for months, waiting for just the right month to do it, and here it is!

Such stories were notable not only for their frequency but also for their laudatory tone; for the first time, women who fought back against harassers were regarded as heroes rather than comic characters, as subjects rather than objects. Society was transitioning, slowly but surely, from expecting and advocating female dependence on men to recognizing their desire and ability to defend themselves.
The suffragists rejected the notion, advanced by the Chicago Vice Commission, that unchaperoned women should dress as modestly as possible—no painted cheeks or glimpse of ankle—in order to avoid unwanted attention. Also in New York, a hundred female factory workers, all wielding hatpins, attacked police officers who arrested two of their comrades for making allegedly anarchistic speeches.
